Lapa

The quarter Lapa was formed on 11 February 1770. The name of Lapa had its origins in a rock called Lapa da Moura. The development of Lapa took place after the earthquake of 1755, under the urban trace and orientation of Pombaline builldings.

With greater monumentality was built the Basilica da Estrela, between 1779 and 1790, with a convent attached. The top of the dome of Basilica da Estrela is undoubtedly one of Lisbon's greatest tourist attractions, though not much advertised. In fact there are few people among us who had the privilege of admiring the power requirement and entrancing scenery that is visible from this point.

Lapa is mainly a residential area and also a large presence in trade and services. In this historic quarter is also located one of the most beautiful gardens in Lisbon, Jardim Guerra Junqueiro, better known as Jardim da Estrela, where you can find the oldest bandstand built in Lisbon.
